Memphis, it’s time to act: another horse has fallen.
This weekend, as tourists enjoy downtown Memphis, our city’s carriage horses will once again be forced to endure exhaustion, heat, traffic, and long hours without proper care. And yet, another tragic incident has already happened.
A recent news report from WREG highlights growing concerns after a horse collapsed while pulling a carriage in downtown Memphis. This is not an isolated incident. Horses have fallen before—and they will continue to suffer until we take action.
Other cities have already banned this outdated practice:
- Chicago voted to ban horse-drawn carriages in 2020.
- San Antonio is phasing them out by 2030.
- Guadalajara, Mexico, replaced them with electric carriages.
Memphis has seen the dangers and suffering firsthand. How many more horses have to collapse before we follow suit?
- Share this post to raise awareness.
- Sign the petition to demand an end to this cruelty.
- Contact your City Council representative and urge them to take action.
Memphis has the opportunity to be a city of compassion, not cruelty. These horses cannot speak for themselves, but we can. Let’s make sure we are heard.
