The United States makes up 4% of the global population but uses 20% of the world’s pesticides. There are 85 different pesticides that are banned in the European Union that we continue to use here in the United States. We are literally allowing our families to be poisoned with chemicals.
I have introduced legislation to ban toxic pesticides like glyphosate, but it is not enough to just ban these toxic pesticides. We also need to incentivize farmers, many of whom are great stewards of the land, to transition to more regenerative agricultural practices. That is why I have introduced bills such as The Climate Stewardship Act to help farmers to not just survive without toxic pesticides, but to thrive.
I have introduced legislation to reform our food system, which is a system that is severely broken. It’s broken for independent family farmers, who have suicide rates three times higher than other Americans and who are losing their farms to foreclosure and bankruptcy. It’s broken from a climate change perspective. It’s broken from a public health perspective. Our food system is broken for farm workers and food workers. Our current food system is a system that simply does not reflect our collective values. We must all join together and demand change.
