Cruel coursers have been stopped from terrorising Irish hares under the government’s new COVID19 Level 5 restrictions.
The new restrictions (Statutory Instrument S.I. No. 695 of 2020) have removed coursing from a list of exempted activities.
The earlier Level 3 measures had controversially included "approved coursing events" among the activities allowed to proceed.
A notice posted on the Irish Coursing Club website today (24 December) acknowledged that the new restrictions have led to "coursing not being permitted as the country enters Level 5 status".
"With deep regret, this means the Christmas/New Year calendar of events cannot take place as scheduled and no netting of hares will take place in compliance with legislation," it added.
Until being forced to stop, coursers had been netting hares and using them as live lures for dogs to chase at several meetings around the country. The bloodsport continued last weekend and up until Tuesday of this week, with more meetings scheduled for St Stephen's Day and every day next week, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
The latest restrictions apply up until at least 12 January, when they are due to be reviewed.
In a renewed appeal to Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien this week, ICABS reminded him of a statement he made in October, i.e. "hares are a protected species, and are better off being in the wild rather than being held in captivity in large groups.”
We urged him to act to stop coursing from going ahead, highlighting the fact that up to 178 people or more were shamefully attending coursing meetings, as levels of infections and deaths increased.
We added: "Please permanently withhold the coursing licence and help bring to an end a bloodsport which a 77% majority of Irish citizens want banned (just 9% want it to continue, according to a RED C poll). With COVID19, RHD2 and the suffering, stress, injury and death caused to hares at coursing meets, there should be absolutely no hesitation in finally ending this shameful activity. This move for Irish wildlife would win you and the government praise in Ireland and around the world."
Please join us in urging Minister O'Brien to now order the release of all hares in captivity, as he did in October when the country moved from Level 3 to the previous Level 5.
