“I am giving Deputy Paul Murphy’s bill my full support”: Thank you to Social Democrats TD, Cian O’Callaghan (Dublin Bay North) for confirming that he will be voting in favour of the Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill 2020.
The Bill successfully passed first stage in the Dail last month and if it gets through a lottery system, could be back before the Dail in the coming months.
In a message to the Irish Council Against Blood Sports this week, the Dublin Bay North TD stated: “Hare coursing and fox hunting are incredibly cruel practices and the laws allowing these practices in Ireland need to be abolished immediately. I fully support legislation to remove these cruel practices permanently.”
Deputy O’Callaghan, a former Mayor of Fingal, previously emphasised that he is “strongly opposed to all blood sports” and that he believes “the State should ensure that animals live lives free of pain and discomfort and that animals are strongly protected from cruelty, neglect and abandonment”.

In 2016, the party voted in favour of Deputy Maureen O’Sullivan’s bill which sought to ban hare coursing. Joint-leaders Roisin Shortall (Dublin North-West) and Catherine Murphy (Kildare North) have in the past voted in favour of proposed legislation amendments which aimed to ban hare coursing, foxhunting, terrierwork, digging-out and ferreting. They also pushed for a ban on fur farming. The party has voted against the government’s massive grants to horse and greyhound racing.

ACTION ALERT
Contact the government and demand that hare coursing and hunting are banned. Remind them that a RED C opinion poll conducted last year confirmed that 77 per cent of Irish citizens want hare coursing banned (just 9 per cent disagree with a ban) and 77 per cent want foxhunting banned (just 12 per cent disagree with a ban).
