Update on Ban plastic confetti

Here’s what’s happened so far:

Immediately after posting the survey, I began contacting various Bay Area city managers and representatives in Sacramento, as well as representatives in Washington DC.

Currently in the city of San Jose, and possibly in the county of Santa Clara, there is an additional annual of charge for water management and cleaning of nearly $100 to “help protect natural water ways”. Couple months ago, San Jose city Staff was putting out feelers and community surveys to gauge if they could raise that annual fee to “keep waterways clean of debris” by another $100.

After contacting the city manager‘s office as well as the local advisory board for parks and rec I provided them a report as well as information on steps to easily help to mitigate unnecessary allowances of small, single use disposable plastics, like confetti and glitter in public spaces like city and county parks, open spaces and trails, and city and County properties.

Prior to this, I had contacted many individuals at the water department, San Jose waste management, San Jose city Council members, San Jose parks & rec, and other civic staff.

The city of San Jose has volunteer crews that pick up trash in San Jose parks. These groups come through twice a year, but still, it has not been able to make a sufficient impact on cleaning up where organizations companies and individuals have used confetti and other small trash.

Additionally I have written an extensive report on the local costs of data centers that I have been using as an advocating and educational tool.
