Haley Elledge started this petition to TLC network founder John S. Hendricks and

Every year in the U.S an estimated amount of 2.5 billion girls participate in about 10,000 beauty pageants (Women’s News, 2016). And from a 2003 study it was revealed that out of 131 beauty pageants competitors 26% of them were diagnosed with an eating disorder while 57% admitted to 'needing' to be skinnier and are trying to lose weight.

Young children are being forced by parents to participate in these unhealthy pageants causing them to gain mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive disorders... all for what? The title of 'Grand Supreme'? A glitzy, rhinestone encrusted crown?

- Martina Cartwright conducted a research study called, Princess by Proxy (2012) outlining the true reasoning little girls are participating in these pageants, the answer was simple- the parents. There's a psychological behavior these parents are labelled with called, "achievement by proxy distortion" meaning parents focusing on their own needs, craving success for a financial or social gain while abusing the needs of their own children. This behavioral distortion has been believed to lead to; child objectification, risky decisions, and even in some cases emotional/physical child abuse.

- Another concern with this industry is the sexualization of the participants. Pageants imply participants must dress in the most exposing, frilly dresses (And swim wear) in order to get high scores. Also pageants score provocative dancing the highest making parents teach their young girls to act and perform this way all because they want to win.

I'm starting a brand new petition to ban child beauty pageants for girls/boys aged 16 and under. After 16 years of age that individual can decide whether they'd like to compete or not, but this ban will prevent parents with ABPD from forcing their children into this corrupt multi-billion dollar industry.

If you care for your children's mental and physical health you will sign this petition so we together can gain the attention of the TLC network producers who are promoting the abuse of child pageants participates with their shows like Toddlers & Tiaras and Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo and force them to stop endorsing this behavior.
