The Irish Council Against Blood Sports is shocked, horrified and sickened that a 2020-21 coursing licence has been granted to snatch timid, defenceless hares from the wild for use as live bait for greyhounds at coursing meetings up and down the country for the next five months.
The shameful decision by Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Darragh O’Brien (Fianna Fáil) was made despite a recommendation from Minister of State for Heritage, Malcolm Noonan (Green Party), that it be refused due to concerns about RHD2.
Cases of the deadly virus, which has the potential to wipe out the Irish Hare, have been detected in recent months in Clare, Cork, Wexford and Kildare. Previous cases have also been identified in Dublin, Kerry, Leitrim, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary and Wicklow. Hare deaths as a result of RHD2 have been confirmed.
Last year, the coursing licence was suspended because of the virus, but the decision was reversed after intense lobbying on behalf of the minority of coursers by rabid pro-coursing TDs. The reversal came despite a warning from Dr Ferdia Marnell of the National Parks & Wildlife Service that the disease is "highly infectious" and "the catching of hares in nets, their transportation in boxes, and their holding in confined areas can all be considered to increase the risk of disease spread."
We contend that the granting of this disgraceful licence by those charged with the conservation of this "protected" species is highly reckless, exposing our iconic Irish Hare to high risk of wipe-out by this deadly virus.
Shame on the government for disregarding the wishes of the majority who want cruel coursing stopped. A RED C opinion poll carried out last September found that 77% of citizens want coursing banned, while just 9% are opposed to a ban.
There are growing calls for a ban on the bloodsport. This week, Paul Murphy TD introduced to Dail Eireann his Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill 2020 which aims to finally secure a ban on the bloodsport.
