The name of a local Indigenous elder called Mullawallah, was purposed for the naming of a Ballarat suburb. It has been rejected by council however, if the Wadawurrung community can obtain 200 signatures the name will be considered by council again.

The issue

What has been known as and called Australia for over 200 hundred years was named differently prior to Colonisation. Many original place names have been altered or ignored since this time. Often these place names have historic and cultural significance for the traditional custodians of the land.  European Australia was originally unaware of place names and therefore other place names were incorporated into the Country. Place  names are significant when considering heritage, culture, tradition and spirituality of the traditional custodians of the land. To name a suburb in honour of an Elder and traditional custodian of the land would be a step in a positive direction in acknowledging that Ballarat and the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation have a history and a story which must not be neglected or forgotten.
