Dear fellow petitioners,
This Tuesday, thanks to additional pressures from fellow petitioners such as Nick, Bruce, Mae and Delores, I was offered an appointment to meet with Minister Gordon Dirks in February. So, there is much to be done before then.
A few days ago, I came to the realization that, in order for us to succeed at undermining the still prevalent discovery math practices, I would need to also target the major driving force behind the discovery math, and that is the Inspiring Education 21st century learning agenda. I have, therefore, created a parallel petition --- Knowledge is Power: Stop the breakdown of our children's education.
I know you have already done so much in the past year to help me make our voices heard for this Back to Basics petition, and I am reluctant to bother you any more. I too hope for a resolution soon so that I may again go about my days with trust and confidence in our education system. But, for now, if I may ask for your continued support in this effort.
I want to walk into the meeting with Minister Dirks knowing not only that I have over 17,000 people with me regarding the math, but also that I have many at my back regarding the Inspiring Education push for the 21st century learning model.
Unlike math where the negative effects of the poor curriculum is glaring at us, I know the issues surrounding Inspiring Education is a littler harder for many to grasp because the entire curriculum overhaul is still in the works. Note that we are not completely against inquiry-based learning as it has always and forever been a part of the curriculum (eg. projects in social studies). Normally, teachers utilize the approach when they deem it necessary for the students to demonstrate understanding/learning. What we are against is the Inspiring Education's agenda to exert the inquiry-based model as the primary method of teaching, and in so doing. unbalancing the curriculum and dictating how teachers should teach. Many of the concerns that I have written about in the petition are what I have extracted from consultations with many good, veteran teachers who have seen fads come and go, and they can see right through this Inspiring Education agenda.
Therefore, I strongly believe that we need to not only tackle the discovery math issue but also the driving force behind the math issue. Please add your voices to this parallel petition. I am grateful for your support.
