The Opposite Risk: Mistaking Zero Sugar for Full Sugar

Dylan WollMelbourne, Australia

There is also a serious risk in the opposite situation. For someone experiencing a low blood glucose level (hypoglycaemia), a person may reach for what they believe is a regular Coca-Cola because they know it contains sugar and can help raise their blood glucose. If they accidentally grab a Coca-Cola Zero Sugar because the packaging looks so similar, they may consume it expecting glucose that simply isn't there. This could delay treatment of their low blood sugar and potentially allow their condition to become more serious. For people with diabetes, being able to identify a sugary drink from a zero-sugar drink quickly can be critical, particularly during an emergency when there may be little time to carefully inspect the label.
