Betr.: Rette die RENATE - Zentrum für Comickultur Berlin
 

Sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Lederer!
 

Seit 1994 ist die RENATE das Zentrum der Comicszene Berlins und die einzige Comicbibliothek Deutschlands.
 

Hier treffen sich zu normalen Zeiten allmonatlich, die Comicschaffenden, Comicinteressierten und Comicaffinen Menschen.
Darüber hinaus macht die RENATE ein unterschwelliges Bildungsangebot für Kinder und Jugendliche.
Die RENATE ist eine Plattform z.B. für das Festival ComicInvasion Berlin, das Berliner Comic Fenster und vieles mehr.
Jede(r) Comickünstler*in, die nach Berlin kommt, findet in der RENATE eine neue Familie, die divers, international und offen für alle Altersgruppen ist.
Einige Comicschaffende wuchsen quasi in der RENATE auf, von den ersten Skizzen zum*zur international bekannten Comickünstler*in bot die RENATE immer einen Tummelplatz für Anregung, Experimente, Entdeckungen, Diskurse und Austausch.
In der RENATE verkaufen die verschiedensten Comickünstler*innen ihre liebevoll handgemachten Werke, Zines und Comics.
 

Beheimatet in der Tucholskystr. 32, einer stark gentrifizierten Gegend, stellt die RENATE eine der letzten unabhängig, unkommerziellen Kulturangebote dar.
Ihre Verwurzelung in der Ostberliner Künstlerszene der Wendezeit bietet aber gerade deshalb einen Anziehungspunkt für Touristen, die den Mythos Berlins erleben wollen.
 

Dieser ganz besondere Ort in Berlin ist bedroht.
Seit der Corona-Krise wird im RENATE Comicladen kaum noch etwas verkauft, und da dieses Ladengeschäft die Bibliothek finanziert, ist es absehbar, das in schon zwei Monaten die Miete nicht mehr bezahlt werden kann.
 

Wir, die Berliner Comicschaffenden fordern Sie deshalb auf, als Senator für Kultur und Europa die RENATE unverzüglich kurzfristig und dauerhaft finanziell zu unterstützen.
Die RENATE ist unverzichtbar für die Berliner, Deutsche und Europäische Comicszene!

Re: Save Renate - Culture center for comics in Berlin

Dear Dr. Lederer,

Since 1994 the Renate comic library has been at the very center of Berlin’s comic scene and is the only library of its kind, that is, entirely dedicated to comics, in all of Germany.

It is in this place that under normal circumstances, all Comic professionals, fans and aspiring authors meet up, the first Monday of each month. The Renate Library also offers a wide variety of workshops and activities to children of all ages and to young people. More over Renate is a most crucial platform for organising events such as the Berlin ComicInvasion festival, the Berlin Comic Fenster and many more around the year.

Every comic artist coming to Berlin for the first time is sure to find a welcoming atmosphere within it’s walls. A real family feeling because Renate is by nature diverse, international and open to all age groups.

One can go as far as saying that some comic artist pretty much grew up here, the small library saw them rise from their first ever sketches to reaching international recognition. For all of us here, the Renate is a place to seek advices from professionals, to experiment, to discover, to talk and to exchange about comics.

Renate is also the place where all artists can bring their work, carefully crafted zines and comics to be sold.

 

Situated in the Tucholskystr. 32, a highly gentrified area, Renate is one of the last standing, independent and non-commercially orientated cultural offer left!

With its roots going back deep in the East Berlin cultural scene from even before the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is also prised by tourists looking for a true embodiment of the mythical Berlin culture.

And yet today, this very special place’s own existence is threatened like never before!

Since the beginning of the the Covid-crisis, the sales made by Renate in their small adjoining comic shop have dropped dramatically to virtually nothing. This is however how the whole library is financed and at the actual pace, it will become impossible for them to honour their rent payment within the next two months.

We, the Berlin comic professionals request from you, as senator for Culture and Europe to help financially support Renate without any delay so as to protect this monument of Berlin culture on the short term as well as for the foreseeable future.

We cannot stress enough how indispensable Renate is for the Berlin, German and European Comic Scene!
