Since 2004, the Hunting Act has banned the hunting of wild mammals (notably foxes, deer, hares and mink) with dogs in England and Wales. There have been over 430 successful prosecutions* since its establishment. However week in week out it has become clear that organised hunts across the UK continue to flout the law, operating under the guise of trail hunting. Countless allegations of illegal hunting have not been properly investigated and numerous illegal hunters have got away with it unpunished. The 2004 Hunting Act has a serious enforcement problem. It is time that UK Police Forces took wildlife crime seriously, and step up their efforts to ensure the law is being adequately upheld.
