Further to your emails to us raising your concerns with the accounting for abuse claims, we have reviewed the accounting and disclosure of abuse claims in the 2016 Board of Trustees of the Brisbane Grammar School financial statements.
Disclosure includes:
· All Expenditure due to the royal commission was included in note 6. Reference was made to $1,028,000 costs being mainly for legal advice.
· Note 7 highlighted Litigation settlement expenses. These expenses were in settlement of claims made by past tudents amounting to $2,967,000.
· Note 18 contingent liabilities and contingent assets. The note states – “ At the date of this report, it is not possible to accurately quantify the timing or amount of any future settlements in regard to potential future claims nor the level of insurance that may be available to the School to assist in their settlement.”
Our audit confirmed these disclosures are made in accordance with accounting standards.
We assess the going concern considerations annually as part of our audit.
The recognition and disclosure of current and future claims will continue to be audited annually.
