Stop Adani from Killing the Great Barrier Reef!!!

We are petitioning for action to be taken by the Australian government against the mining of the company, Adani, that plans to coal mine in the Galilee Basin because this plan poses irreversible problems for the Great Barrier Reef, a cultural and historical treasure of Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef has faced an overwhelming amount of coral bleaching directly linked to global warming. When water becomes too warm, the microscopic algae that live in the tissues of coral becomes stressed. These algaes serve as a food and color source for the corals, and, when they are stressed, they leave the tissue, causing the coral to become pale and prone to disease.
In addition to the damage inflicted by coral bleaching, The Great Barrier Reef is threatened by the process of dredging. Dredging is the cleaning out of a bed of water by scooping out mud, weeds, and rubbish with a dredge. Dredging allows for large bulk carriers to access ports easily, but at great cost. Sand, clay, and rock is dug up to make deeper channels for the large ships, throwing sediments into the water that can drift for miles, ruining water quality and smothering coral. Many of the areas affected by the dredge are home to sensitive species, including the Great Barrier Reef, home to over 1500 species of fish, 11 types of hard coral, one-third of the world's soft corals, 134 species of sharks and rays, six of the world's seven species of threatened marine turtles, and more than 30 species of marine mammals. The government approved plan for Adani involves dumping 5 million tons of dredge soil into the great barrier reef.
Now, in addition to these issues, the company Adani wants to mine in the Galilee Basin. The government approved plan for Adani involves dumping 5 million tons of dredge soil into the great barrier reef. This coal mine will be the largest in Australia and will produce an absurd amount of pollution that will pollute the area with massive CO2 emissions for years. The coal burning will increase water temperatures which will cause even more bleaching. Hundreds of coal ships will pass through these waters and increase the risk of oil spills. Australia should follow the rest of the world’s lead, including the US and China, by straying away from the coal industry. The Great Barrier Reef, already suffering from coral bleaching and dredging, does not have that much time.
By asking Australian politicians to interfere and stop Adani’s harmful mining, there is still time to save the Great Barrier Reef.
This is just the first step in preserving our oceans, a massive project that will take the cooperation of all of us. We can start with the Great Barrier Reef. It is one of the world's seven wonders, it is one of the most sought after tourist destination, and it needs our help.
