Tougher laws for killing, harming, neglecting or abusing animals. Jail sentences not just fines.

The issue

We call on the Australian Government to introduce a new law, called 'Lucky's Law' to prevent any individual/s from committing any act/s against animals, as outlined above, that only result in a fine and bond.

On March 12th 2015, Nathan Thompson from Kurri Kurri, NSW, took eleven young puppies to a bushland at McLeods Road and he bludgeoned nine of them to death.

He began killing them with a rock, hitting them on the head and throwing them into the bush. A witness, out walking his own two dogs, confronted Thompson who drove off with five of the puppies still alive.

Only two of the puppies didn't die at the scene and only one has survived. That puppy is now named 'Lucky' and she is under care with the RSPCA at Rutherford.

Thompson has been in before the courts previously with a juvenile record that the court was told was 'Not good', with the most recent matters in 2007, and the most recent adult matters in 2011.

Thompson pleaded guilty in East Maitland Local Court on Friday the 13th of March 2015, to serious animal cruelty, aggravated animal cruelty and resist arrest.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Justin Watson said police opposed bail. This was denied.

He cannot now own, acquire, buy or possess any animal, or even be around another animal without an adult present, for a decade.

The order, was made in East Maitland local court by magistrate Caleb Franklin.

Thompson would be seeking an intensive corrections order rather than full-time custody, the court heard.

This is not good enough. This man knowingly and without hesitation bludgeoned these young puppies to death. He left two of them, still alive and in trauma, bleeding from their eyes, mouth, nose and ears. One died at the scene.

Australia has to toughen up on any individual found guilty of harming, killing, aggravated cruelty, neglect or abuse of any animal. No longer should a person/s be able to just pay a fine, or have an order in place.

We ask that the Australian Government and Tony Abbott help us protect those who have no voice, to use your voice for them.

Let's send a message to the community and our leaders that we will no longer tolerate abuse and cruelty to any animal. Let's show the world that we can lead the way and that all animals deserve to be treated with love and respect.

Please don't let these nine puppy deaths go unanswered for. Sign today and help protect all animals.

As an animal supporter, a person who has two rescue dogs, this made me sick. What's worse, is it happened in my area. It has to stop, we need to take a stand. Please sign and share this petition. Thank you
