The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, stretching over 2300km (which is larger than the UK, Holland and Switzerland combined), and one of Australia's largest tourist attractions. Sadly, the coral reef is dying, and scientists have shown that there is damage to over 93% of the reef. The Great Barrier reef is home to over 1500 different species, many of them threatened with extinction. If we don't take action, they will die.

The rich and beautiful colours of the Great Barrier Reef are fading to a dull grey, losing the vibrancy which attracts two million tourists each year. This is called coral bleaching, caused by water temperatures that are rising too high. 93% of the reef is bleached, and this is too much.

Having our Great Barrier Reef is a privilege. It's beautiful, and a treasure for us all. It is an economic asset for Australia and is home to some of our planet's most endangered species. These animals and organisms are dying because of us. They have done nothing wrong and we are destroying their home. They are completely undeserving of this. It needs to stop.

What can we do to solve this problem? Some solutions include:

*Banning the deposit of dredge spoil and waste around the Great Barrier Reef

*Passing laws to reduce climate change, carbon emissions and greenhouse gases

*Banning coal mining around the Great Barrier Reef

*Passing laws to keep our water clean

The Australian government has deployed a sustainability plan, but it's not enough to prevent the destruction of our Great Barrier Reef. We need to take strong action now. We can't afford to wait more. 93% of the Great Barrier Reef is already bleached. Even since 2016, a further half of what was left of our reef has died. This is our fault, and we are the only ones who can fix it. The Great Barrier Reef needs us, and we need it.
