Hospital staff resigning due to lack of PPE

Adrian Cush
Brisbane, Australia

Apr 4, 2020 —

The PPE situation is getting worse by the day. One of Melbourne's biggest hospitals has been forced to send about 100 staff into self-isolation. Meanwhile, the Victorian Health Workers Union says PPE was being withheld for only some healthcare workers: "There's people as we speak resigning. It's really frightening — it's a nightmare out there."

We’re concerned that health ministers and chief medical officers are playing down the PPE shortage. Can you stand with healthcare workers and share this petition?

We only have to look to the UK to see where the situation in Australia is heading. Overnight, the death of two nurses in their 30s has increased demands for proper PPE, while another frontline worker quit her job after being forbidden from wearing a face mask.

Tracy Brennan, a UK auxiliary nurse, quit her job after she was not allowed to wear a surgical face mask she had bought herself. If the PPE shortage gets to crisis point in Australia, will healthcare workers have to resort to homemade PPE? Will we be turned away from work?

Today in the US, the CDC has recommended everyone wear a mask in public. If that idea takes hold in Australia it will put even more pressure on the broken PPE supply chain.

We know health departments are working on getting PPE to hospitals, but we need clear answers and concrete commitments. How much PPE is in stock? How much of it is being produced? What kind of PPE is it? And perhaps most importantly, we need clear guidelines around what we should be wearing and for how long, informed by science not stock levels.

Please, can you stand with healthcare workers? If we’re not protected, we can’t keep you and your families protected.
