The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on Thursday announced that it will be recalling and banning eight types of breast implants for the next six months while their manufacturers address “a number of safety and performance concerns”.
The TGA have notified all implant sponsors (NOT SURGEONS who are clearly in the best position to report cases) that they must report all cases of BIA-ALCL to the TGA within 10 working days and provide six-monthly reports of Australian and worldwide supply, complaints and adverse events data.
A total of 107 Australian women have been diagnosed with BIA-ALCL and five women from Australia and New Zealand have died from BIA-ALCL.
