Because of my childhood, coupled with other experiences, I am a supporter of the courts equally considering FATHERS for child custody. Custody should never default to the mother.
Here’s why, along with some exceptions I feel should be mandated.
1. Had my father gained custody of me and my siblings, we would not have grown up tortured, raped, and shattered to the core as children. My father fought for us until he was at the point of bankruptcy. He sent social workers to the compounds to do investigations that never really happened and more. My memoir, “Cult Child,” shares further on this. Had he gained custody, we would have grown up safe, protected and acclimated to normal society.
2. Children who can speak should be ALLOWED a voice in the court system, instead of being isolated away from the proceedings. Children are not a parent’s property to war over or use as pawns against each other. Children are human beings who were born to adults who likewise deserve the education, healing, finances and overall tools to get to be great parents. Every child deserves the opportunity to have healthy parents, co-parenting included. More community based focus is needed.
3. Financial influence and internal connections between individuals and the court systems must be cut. Every single custody case in America at this point needs some kind of advocate for the CHILD, not paid by the state. No. An independent and unbiased advocate. There are tests that can be given which show patterns of bias in a person. It should be part of the applicant process. The only institution coming the closest to developing this is CASAgal.
If we don’t put children as the #1 cause that we support, nothing else really matters, because the actual survival of planet earth depends on the well being of our future human generations. The ONLY way to ensure earth’s future thriving is to break cycles of abuse, neglect and poverty.
Why every single American isn’t obsessed with this issue is incomprehensible to me. It is, one of our country’s most devastating epidemics.
