We are having an effect - the museum is starting to have an inkling of what Centennial Street means to people. Here is the latest from their Facebook Page: "We’re listening. Like you, everyone who works and volunteers in this museum shares a great affection for Centennial Street. Auckland Museum’s building dates back to the 1920s and I’m sure you appreciate it requires ongoing care and maintenance. The reality is that the work that's now essential in the east gallery can’t be done with the exhibition in situ. Sharing Auckland Stories is an essential part of what this Museum does. For example, over 100,000 Aucklanders of all ages and backgrounds have already visited Taku Tāmaki (our current temporary exhibition) since it opened late May and the feedback has been very positive. I can assure you that all of the collections items in Centennial Street will be conserved and cared for until we can once again display them. We will also retain a number of the Centennial Street shop-fronts so that the popular history of former times can be reproduced for further generations to enjoy. We are cracking ahead with the planning for a wide range of new and refreshed galleries (please see our Future Museum document, published three years ago and on our website, where we have signalled what we are doing, why we are doing it and how we are tackling it). Some differences are already visible, watch this coming year for many more. Knowing of the huge public support for 'stories of Auckland', and for people being able to sample the 'feel' of Auckland past, we’ll be prioritising this. Auckland's history will continue to be an essential part of what we deliver. Meanwhile, please know that we do read every item of feedback - the views of the public are taken into account when we consider what elements of the collection to share and the style in which we do it.
