Auckland council: don't close our beloved Piha Campground!
The issue
The Piha Campground has been a place of refuge, adventure, and community. Nestled in the beautiful Waitākere Ranges of New Zealand, it's where many of us have made memories that will last a lifetime. But now, this beloved campground faces the threat of permanent closure.
Auckland Council is now considering whether to close the campground for good - because parts of it have flooded occasionally and could be a threat to peoples lives.
The Piha Campground - and Camp Mother Fiona - is more than just a campground to us; it’s a gateway to reconnecting with nature, a cornerstone of local culture, and an invaluable economic asset to the Piha community.
In the face of flood the campground has moved to cut off a big section of the campground that's at most risk to floods.
The closure of the campground would not only erase decades of history and personal stories but also negatively impact the local economy, which depends on tourism. Campers contribute significantly to the area by supporting local businesses. It's essential to preserve this source of livelihood for the many who call Piha home.
We want to ensure the campground remains open while staying safe. But there has been no consultation with either the campground nor the local residents about the best way forward.
We the undersigned call on Auckland Council to keep this vital part of our community open.
Do not permanently close Piha Campground without first working with its operator, the community and appropriate experts to determine whether it can continue operating safely, potentially through a reduced footprint, strengthened evacuation procedures and restrictions on the highest-risk areas.
Please sign this petition to save the Piha Campground.
