AU: Read the Names of the Class of 2020 on May 9th

Today American University stated in an email to the Class of 2020 that the names of ALL graduates will NOT be read on May 9th (during the re-scheduled commencement ceremony) and will simply be reduced to names on a digital program. The graduation class's contributions to this institution should NOT be reduced to a typed inscription. The Class od 2020 has worked hard for this achievement and should be recognized accordingly.

The recent changes due to COVID-19 have left our graduating class in an extremely precarious position and milestones in our lives like commencement have been unjustly ripped away from us. While I understand why AU had to cancel this event and reschedule, the lack of effort and care shown towards the class of 2020 is appalling.

Many students may not be able to attend the rescheduled in-person ceremony in December, making the "celebration" on May 9th their only opportunity to be recognized. Students who are first-generation college graduates and their families will not hear their achievements be recognized. Also, students may not have the financial means or may be ill in December barring their ability to return for a weekend in December. Additionally, we may still be in the grips of this pandemic at that time.

The administration could easily organize a plan so that the deans of each college on May 9th can take the time after the commencement speaker to read the names of all graduates in the class of 2020 from their school. This is the least that we as tuition-paying students of this university are owed. If you believe that AU should enact this change in the commencement programming on May 9th, 2020 to give the Class of 2020 the recognition and closure they deserve, please sign this petition! Thank you!
