To be clear, I am very well acquainted with the work and impact of Ida B. Wells. Indeed, it is her legacy that allows her to stand as such a stunning counterpoint and indictment of the views espoused by Henry W. Grady.
However, my position is not about Ms. Wells per se, nor is my opposition to the renaming a denigration of her importance. To debate Ms. Wells' cultural and national significance is a deflection and a distraction from the issue at hand. It's really not about her. Community feedback overwhelmingly supported a place-based name, and I do, too. That's it.
Based on community feedback, the Atlanta Board of Education should VOTE NO to the committee's renaming recommendation.
