I am grateful for the support of each and every one of you in asking Meijer for healthy checkout aisles. I also really appreciate your comments on the community page as well as the personal emails I've received from those of you who have struggled with weight and/or illness.
I am also very grateful for the well-written story by Shandra Martinez at MLive. Unlike Good Morning America, she focused on the bigger picture and the real issues at stack in this petition.
Meijer issued a press release which you can read in the story below, but I still haven't heard from them directly. Unfortunately, I think it's going to take many more signatures, more media coverage, or direct communication with customers to push them to respond in a favorable way.
So I'm asking all of you to do one or more of the following things:
1. Contact Meijer directly at #1-877-363-4537 . Tell them you'd like healthy checkout aisles and ask them why they haven't contacted Jane Kramer with a response.
2. Post a picture on their FB page of products/foods you'd like to see (and not see) in a healthy checkout aisle.
3. Contact your local media outlets and tell them about the petition.
4. Ask friends, family, co-workers and neighbors to support the petition.
5. START YOUR OWN PETITION FOR HEALTHY CHECKOUT AISLES AT YOUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE! I'll be the first one to sign it! :)
6. Help support other petitions/actions asking retailers to remove junk food from checkout. Here are two organized by CSPI:
Petition to Kroger (http://bit.ly/2hXUMVQ)
Action alert to H-E-B, Walmart, Southeastern Grocers, Wakefern Food Co., Ahold Delhaize, Meijer, Hy-Vee, Albertsons, Publix, & Kroger (http://bit.ly/2iGXPTb)
And one last recommendation, which I hope isn't overstepping any boundaries. I highly recommend watching the documentary "Fed Up" by Stephanie Soechtig, (Executive Producers Katie Couric & Laurie David). While I haven't done any fact-checking regarding the statistics in the film, I was truly inspired by the childrens' stories of their struggles with diabetes and obesity.
Thank you all again!
Respectfully and with much gratitude,
Jane Kramer
