I would like Arriva North East to reduce the ticket prices for children aged 16-18 year olds in full time education. Currently a weekly bus pass for a child this age in full time education is £13.60. This is £5 more than other local public transport companies, all of the others charge less than £10 per week. Having spoken to Arriva on this matter before, they have explained that they receive no subsidies for passengers in this age group however I do not believe Arriva can justify charging children just £4 less than the current adult weekly fares. When I could fly my child to Poland for less than the price of the weekly bus pass it is time to look again at the rising travel costs which parents are facing. Those on benefits or low incomes receive help from the local education authority so once again it is those who are working hard who are hit hardest. Whilst I am aware that these are difficult times for all businesses, I would like Arriva to consider and appreciate that this is also a difficult period for consumers and I believe that if they were to give back a little to customers in this way, this would in turn increase their passenger numbers and therefore they would not lose out financially. I would like to see the weekly bus pass fare for this particular group reduced to under £10 inline with the rest of the local industry.
