Animal Hero Kids kindness education charity empowers and recognizes courageous youth. We were shocked to see a recent video of a hammerhead shark being dragged with a high speedboat, alive, as onlookers filmed and laughed. Disturbing images and more videos found on Facebook shows multiple species of animals being abused. Images include a "dead" dog (who's "meat didn't go to waste") and the torture of a white pelican and sea gull, among other animals.
Media reports are currently stating the perpetrators are under investigation to see “if any laws were broken.” We need to ensure this previously investigated and never charged individual and his cohorts are charged with felony animal cruelty. It is evident that felony animal cruelty statute applies in the situation where the intent is to cause suffering. The video shows abusers laughing as one comments, “look, it's already almost dead.”
From 2015-2017 one of the abusers was investigated by Florida Fish and Wildlife for the abuse of wildlife and no charges were laid. We will NOT let this be repeated!
We want Florida Fish and Wildlife Executive Director, Nick Wiley, State Attorney Ed Brodsky, and Manatee County Sheriff, Rick Wells, to ensure animal cruelty charges are laid against all perpetrators involved. All perpetrators should be punished to the full extent of the law (up to 7 years in prison) as mandated in Florida Statute 828.12. This kind of animal abuse should not be tolerated.
828.12 Cruelty to animals.—
(1) A person who unnecessarily overloads, overdrives, torments, deprives of necessary sustenance or shelter, or unnecessarily mutilates, or kills any animal, or causes the same to be done, or carries in or upon any vehicle, or otherwise, any animal in a cruel or inhumane manner, commits animal cruelty, a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both.
(2) A person who intentionally commits an act to any animal, or a person who owns or has the custody or control of any animal and fails to act, which results in the cruel death, or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering, or causes the same to be done, commits aggravated animal cruelty, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.
