Create a new law requiring harsher penalties for drivers who hit bicyclists
The Issue
On October 20th 2015, I got hit by an 80 year old driver while I was cycling home from class. Luckily, I escaped with only a broken finger and quite a few bumps and bruises. December 27th, 2015 I almost got hit again by an elderly couple in their car. Something really needs to be done and laws need to be changed when it comes to giving and letting the elderly keeping their driving privileges. Tucson Arizona is suppose to be a bike friendly town and no cyclist should be hesitant to go out and ride. Since my accident, there have been 2 fatalitles in Tucson, my hometown, at least one of them was caused by a driver over the age of 80.
According to Tucson Bicycle Crash database (http://bikecolli.info/date/ there were 235 documented crashes in 2014. Arizona's Senior Driving law states that drivers age 70 and older must renew their licenses in person every 5 years, take a vision and written test, accepts requests from family members and others for the DMV to conduct unsafe driver investigations and requires doctors who diagnose patients with Alzheimer's disease or other conditions that may make them unsafe drivers to report the diagnosis. I think that Arizona can really benefit from adopting a law that requires that 70 and older renew their licenses every year to every 2 years, their competency to be evaluated and their reaction time to be tested. Any accidents where they cause injury to the other person involved, they need their driving privileges taken away instead of just a minor failure to yield citation. Cyclist are not being given the 5 foot rule, drivers are not yielding to the cyclist, drivers younger and older are constantly distracted and are not keeping their eyes on the road. This applies to everyone who has a license. Not only does it cause harm to the cyclist, but to both families involved.
