Hello Deaf Community,
I wanted to provide you all an update about the ASL-English Interpretation Program.
To begin, thank you all for your ongoing and incredible support by sending letters and signing of the petition.
We recently met with the Minister of Education. The meeting itself was very positive. We had an opportunity to ask a lot of questions and have a very good discussion.
They shared that one of the biggest reasons for the delayed approval is because of the recent election where the NDP won the election. The change in government has caused a number of delays which is why they have not yet approved the program’s budget.
They did also recognize that the program is very important for our community’s access and that our advocacy is very important. They added that they are currently working with RRC but have not yet made any final approvals. They hope to make an announcement possibly in January of 2025.
So, for now we must wait but we should still be diligent by remaining aware of our government’s actions and decisions regarding this matter.
