After contacting Unicode Consortium, the organisation that sets the bar for new and existing emoji characters, a piece of vital information has come to light.
One of Unicode's representatives told Ginger Parrot:
"Our code charts are actually black-and-white. The color icons used on phones and so forth are supplied by platform vendors, so you would really need to engage with them regarding all issues of how the emoji characters are represented in a color environment."
With that in mind, our next step is to contact Apple, etc, with our proposal to include redheads on the emoji keyboard - it's not up to Unicode.
So, if any of you have contacts within Apple, please contact hello@gingerparrot.co.uk - it's time for action!
