Thank you for signing the petition to demand that Apple protect authentic photography. 

We are at the beginning of a campaign to convince Apple to develop and deploy technology to ensure that the photographs and videos we take with our iPhones are unequivocally authentic.

I’ve been testing the most effective petition message, as well as promoting the petition to other change.org users. After a month of testing, the petition itself is rated by change.org as “strong”, scoring 9 out of a possible 10 points. Furthermore, almost 4% of randomly selected change.org users sign the petition when prompted, a signal that the petition will be very effective when more broadly promoted.

In the meantime, Apple is continuing to develop artificial intelligence for the iPhone and iOS. Due to be released in September, “Apple Intelligence” will include an update to the Photos app which is reported to include a “clean up” feature, using generative AI. I’ve installed the new Photos app on my iPad Pro M4, and that “feature” has not yet been released to beta testers. I will update you on what I find as soon as it appears in the next beta, probably next month.

I’ll be focussing my efforts until September on promoting the petition on Facebook, where I have the most experience with social media (I’ll explore other Meta platforms like Instagram and Treads, but would happily defer to others with more experience). I’ve started a Facebook group which I invite you to join now. Even if you want to organize on other social media platforms, this Facebook group will be the place to organize together until we decide otherwise.

Our first goal is to present Apple with thousands of signatures when they release their latest hardware and software in September. Just as any power is built, we’ll do it together by encouraging our friends, family, and colleagues to join us by signing the petition. We’ll reinforce Apple’s basic approach to AI, but let them know generative AI has no place in producing photographic, video, and audio content in Apple technology.
