STOP hurting our eyes, Apple
The issue
Dear Apple users
I have been an Apple user since 1994. This year, I have had to drop out of all Apple products due to health-related issues caused by certain technological choices they have made. It took me many month to assemble information necessary to understand the cause of my condition - but I have effectively healed myself by carefully picking each and every device I rest my sight upon these days. Unfortunately they are all non-Apple. Here's why.
For years I suffered serious migraines and vision-induced pain. Prickling pain deep inside the eyes (retinal pain), dryness syndrome on the surface of the eyes (cornea), migraines in the morning if I used iOS devices the night before etc.
Turns out, I was not alone.
Do you have red-eyed, teary-eyed colleagues at work? You might me able to help yourself, help themselves by educating on screen technologies and choosing to use only best, ergonomic devices.
Some users of Apple devices, if not many, have been affected by a condition when their eyes get very irritated by a range of Apple-manufactured screens in devices ranging from Apple iPhone 5, 5S, 6, 6S and iPad Pro 9.7 and 12 inch. Users of modern MacOS may also be affected since it employs "improved color" techniques.
Regular users experienced symptoms including eyes burning, head ache, excessive tearing, nausea. The described effects are caused by Apple employing sub-optimal manufacturing practices designed to save expenses and achieve scale and include temporal color dithering aka FRC in the display drivers. They basically buy a lot of panels, and let's just say not of the best color abilities. They need the color dithering to simulate better color, especially the new DCI-P3 attempt that is marketed as having 25% more color - true, just not at the same time. Your brain is supposed to aggregate the quick color changes into a bigger color space. When it refuses so, you feel all sort of drama.
The petition is to Apple to please stop practices of synthetic color extension and simulation. The best available ergonomic screen technologies should be adhered to:
- remove any flicker in the backlight or the pixels themselves;
- remove temporal dithering of chrominance or luminosity, employ native 8-bit panels instead;
- control spectrum and polarization of the backlighting to remove excessive UV and blue light;
- in cases where OLED screens are introduced, employ no PWM for brightness control.
The above measures, combined, would preclude a multitude of adverse visual conditions. Even if you are not affected by the issues above, as you clock more time using such products you may arrive at a situation where you're no longer able to use computer screens unless they are bought with consideration of issues described.
