Appeal: Decision Makers, Prioritize the Safety Upgrades of this Dangerous PBR Intersection
The Issue
Fix the Evans Street P.B.R. Intersection. Demand Immediate Safety Upgrades!
On August 30, 2026, the Priority Bus Route (P.B.R.) intersection near Evans Street, St. Augustine claimed another victim of a vehicular accident. A beloved member of our community was rushed to the hospital, and was placed in a medically induced coma following severe chest trauma.
The Evans Street PBR intersection is notorious for having road accidents and is considered hazardous by all who know it. The August 30, 2026 incident was not the first severe collision; there was a similar severe accident on June 11, 2023, in almost the same spot. While driver factors are a general concern at any intersection, there are major infrastructure issues that can be corrected. Road accidents at the Evans Street P.B.R. intersection are PREVENTABLE and should never happen.
How many more must suffer at this intersection?
NO MORE, NOT EVEN ONE!
IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE!!!
THE ISSUES
- The Light Trap: There is no high-visibility sign informing drivers about the operation and use of the confusing two-traffic-lights system.
- Blind spot: There is neither a metal nor a painted “NO PARKING” sign on the roadside before the traffic lights, leading to vehicles stopping there and causing critical blind spots.
- Excessive Speed: The P.B.R. speed limit is not enforced by a Radar Enforced Speed Detection system and there are no “Slow” signs on the road before the traffic lights. Additionally, there is insufficient signage reminding P.B.R. drivers of the speed limit.
- The current P.B.R. traffic lights should be replaced by High-Visibility Overhead Gantry Signals for easier distance viewing.
- There are no Traffic Signal Countdown Timers to facilitate safer driving.
- There is no Yellow Box Junction which may help keep the intersection clear.
Attention Decision Makers:
The Honourable Jerlean John, The Minister of Works and Infrastructure (MOWI)
Senator The Honourable Eli Zakour, The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation (MTCA) / Traffic Management Branch
The Honourable Khadijah Ameen, Member of Parliament for St. Augustine
We, the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, demand that MOWI and MTCA/Traffic Management Branch immediately implement safety upgrades at the Evans Street P.B.R. intersection, St. Augustine.
Please sign your name and share this link for the petition.
We demand SAFER ROADS.
No other family should suffer such tragedy.
These accidents are PREVENTABLE.
Let’s join our voices to PROTECT our families.
