We the undersigned demand the city of Reykjavik, Iceland apologise to the dogs of the world for banning them from 1924–1984. It’s true: The city didn’t just say, “Get off the couch.” Reykjavik said, “Get out of town.”

Even after the ban ended, the discrimination did not: A special permit was required to own a dog in Reykjavik until 20 years ago this year. And was there ever an apology? No.

20 years is long enough to wait.

In honour of the official Pet Holiday Calendar’s Pet Rights Week, it’s time the city of Reykjavik apologises to the dogs. The apology must be posted on Instagram or TikTok by a city official on or before 30 June, 2026. If an apology is not received by then, the dogs will continue to bark.
