News Channel Fined for Promoting Hate on Air
The News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority has imposed a ₹ 50,000 fine on News18 for its communally-colored coverage of the Karnataka hijab matter. It’s a win for hate-free India. Spread the news so more people support this cause.
NBDSA says the anchor violated the Code of Ethics by giving a communal colour and linking panellists supporting the wearing of hijabs to Al-Qaeda. The comments made are too hate-filled and unpleasant to be quoted here.
The NBDSA is an independent media self-regulatory body made up of
senior journalists. In this instance, it cited a 2021 order of the Bombay High Court that says a “news anchor must use their mind to ensure a programme doesn’t go beyond permissible limits and must mute speakers who fly off at a tangent”. This stand is a major step forward in the movement to hold media accountable. We must celebrate this milestone and proceed with renewed vigor.
While the two of us continue to follow-up for a meeting with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, we are also now reaching out to NBDSA for solutions to ensure ALL media are held accountable.
You can help us by persuading more people to sign this petition. Growing signatures will convey continued public interest in ensuring hate-free news streaming into our homes.
