Stop the Evictions of Bargee Travellers on the River Cam

The Issue

We the undersigned call for an end to the eviction, persecution, criminalisation and discrimination of the bargee travellers of the River Cam by the combined authorities of the Council, Cam Conservators and University of Cambridge and demand that they are given permission to moor.

The council, in collaboration with and influenced by Cambridge University & Cam Conservators, intend to 'socially cleanse' the River Cam of it's highly vulnerable Bargee Traveller Community, whom they are failing in their duty of care, which would lead to widespread homelessness.

This racially & ethnically diverse community, many of whom are families with children, and many of whom have protected characteristics such as disability, Roma status, age and pregnancy/maternity, are seen as a huge asset by local residents who are in uproar over the treatment of their neighbours by the council.

Historically Bargees were living on the River Cam and the waterways of Cambridgeshire long before other river users, such as rowers, and bargees were a vital part of the local economy, bringing freight into the city of Cambridge including the Pump Station (now the Museum of Technology). In this way Bargee Travellers on the River Cam are part of our local & National Heritage and as such should be protected not evicted and allowed to moor without further disproportionate interference in the right to private and family life by the authorities.
