Twenty years ago, the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami event of the Indian Ocean left in its wake an estimated 228,000 deaths, 125,000 injured and 1,740,000 displaced people across 14 countries. Although an event of this magnitude is rare, smaller natural disasters such as the recent earthquake in Port Vila (Vanuatu) and Cyclone Chido over South-east Africa are far more common in comparison. People impacted by these events need immediate help and a Hospital Ship with medical, surgical, food and water resources on board would be a most welcome sight in places where it is needed. In helping those in need, the volunteers who work on these ships would be witnesses to rewarding, life-changing experiences, including their own.
