Friend,
I don’t often write emails like this. But something happened this week that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.
One of our AWIP-supported rescuers in the Philippines sent me a photo and a short message.
She had just rescued a tiny puppy from the side of a rural road.
The puppy’s name is Angel.
When our rescuer found her, Angel was still sitting on her mother’s chest. Still suckling. Still waiting. But her Mama had already been dead for several days. Her body was decomposing.
She had been abandoned while pregnant—left to give birth alone, with no food, no shelter, and no help. She didn’t survive.
And somehow, Angel did.
She stayed right there. In the heat. In the dirt. Crawling with ticks. Her skin cracked and raw. Hungry. Helpless. Still trying to feed from a body that could no longer protect her.
She waited beside her mother, Friend. Hoping someone would come.
No one did until our rescuer arrived.
I’ve worked in animal rescue for many years now. I’ve seen cruelty. I’ve seen suffering. But this image—of a puppy clinging to the only love she had, days after death—it broke me.

Some say dogs forget quickly. I don’t believe that.
Angel didn’t leave her Mama’s side. Not even after the flies came. Not even when her tiny body started to give out.
Angel waited because she still had hope. And I do too... that people like you will stand with her, Friend.
If you feel what I felt when I saw that photo, please let Angel’s story live on.
Add your name. Speak up. Be the voice that never came for her Mama.

P.S. She waited because she still believed someone would come. I still believe that people like you will choose to stand with her. Please add your name now if you agree that what happened to Angel and her Mama is wrong, Friend.
