As we all know, the ongoing war in Ukraine has brought unimaginable suffering to countless innocent lives—both human and animal. Amidst the chaos, there are stories of resilience and hope that remind us of the enduring spirit of survival, even in the darkest times. One such story is that of Gerda, an eight-year-old dog who has faced more than her fair share of pain and fear.
Gerda was found on the streets of Zhytomyr, a city ravaged by the war. She had been beaten, bullied, and subjected to the most unimaginable cruelties. The locals, perhaps out of fear or despair, saw her as a threat, and she was constantly under the threat of poisoning or being shot. She was caged, isolated, and left to live in fear. But Gerda survived.
Now, Gerda faces another battle—one for her very life. The temporary foster home that has kept her safe can no longer care for her, and there are no shelters able to take her in. Worse still, the shelters that do exist are overcrowded and cannot offer the rehabilitation that Gerda desperately needs.
After months of searching, a rehabilitation centre has finally offered to help Gerda. However, the costs are high. We need to build an enclosure and hut for her and pay for her ongoing veterinary care.
With the right care, there is hope that Gerda can learn to trust again, to feel safe, and maybe even to find a family who will love her for the gentle soul she truly is. I am sure you agree that Gerda deserves this chance, Friend.
Since the war began, we have provided tens of thousands of pounds in grants to frontline rescuers in Ukraine, ensuring that animals like Gerda are not forgotten in the midst of conflict. These funds have helped countless dogs, cats, and other animals who have been caught in the crossfire, providing them with the food, shelter, and medical care they desperately need. We are fiercely committed to standing by abused dogs like Gerda and supporting the dedicated carers who refuse to give up on them, even in the most dire circumstances.
We will continue to stand by Gerda and others like her, ensuring they have a fighting chance at a better life. Our commitment extends beyond Ukraine, we are determined to support abused animals across the globe, particularly those in conflict zones who often become the forgotten victims of war.
