Badger baiting involves sending trained dogs down badger setts to locate and corner the terrified animals, while hunters dig them out. Once exposed, the badgers endure a nightmarish fate, torn apart by a pack of viciously trained dogs. This despicable activity primarily takes place between November and March, a time when badger sows are pregnant or nurturing their young.
As winter approaches, badgers instinctively become defensive, fiercely protecting their homes and offspring. Exploiting this behaviour, badger baiters engage in this so-called "sport" for their twisted pleasure, inflicting even graver injuries upon their dogs.
The badgers' strength poses a serious threat to the dogs' well-being. The hunters often resort to stitching the wounded dogs themselves, without providing any pain relief or antibiotics. In severe cases, injured dogs are callously shot or left tied up to die.
