Animal Testing. Two words that are slowly making their debut into media and alerting the world what kind of brutality goes on in supposedly regulated laboratories.

Okay, but what is animal testing? According to Cruelty Free International Organization, “An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm.” (1) These tests are in place to show scientists what the effects of new medications, products, chemicals and surgerys will do to the human body without directly testing them on humans. While the idea is good in theory, it is negligent to the animals being tested on and their needs as beings.

Animal experiments vary based on the item or thing that is being tested although some of the more common ones include but aren't limited to, breeding animals to deliberately cause genetic issues and harm, such as Texas A&M is guilty of with breeding dogs to give them muscular dystrophy and watching them wither away (2), testing harmful chemicals on animals and watching the outcome much like Estee Lauder and Avon have been know to do (3). Some more common examples of animal testing are how NASA is testing the effects of extreme radiation exposure on primates (4) and the removal of animal's vital organs at the Lewis Katz Medical School (5).

According to the Humane Society of the United States, “Animal cruelty can be either deliberate abuse or simply the failure to take care of an animal. Either way, and whether the animal is a pet, a farm animal or wildlife, the victim can suffer terribly.” (6) Does animal testing sound all that different? It is the direct neglect of an animal without intent to support its basic physical, emotional and developmental needs. It is important to recognize this blatant infringement of rights as the mass killing and suffering of animals that it is.

How can we help animals escape a life of torture and despair? We need to protest, protest, protest. Nothing ever gets to anyone important without a major push from the community. Besides peaceful protests, we need to come together as a community and reject the brands that authorize this destruction of living animals.

To conclude, the purpose of this was to highlight the extreme mistreatment of animals in testing facilities. I hope after this, you are educated on this massacre occurring during the creation of some of your everyday products. Please support this petition and spread the word.
