We Need Your Testimony or Letters of Support

Hello ASD60 Supporters,

ANCHORAGE NEWS:  The Anchorage School Board approved a committee charter on Feb 4th to look into the concerns brought up by ASD60. We’ve been working closely with them and are hoping to share our thoughts and provide a great presentation to the school board on April 1st at the school board meeting so they can vote on improving the ASD Wellness Policy to include 30 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for recess.

STATEWIDE NEWS:  Senator Mia Costello has sponsored a bill called SB56 that is supposed to mandate 54 minutes of physical activity for all students across Alaska in K-8 grades. It amends the existing Physical Activity Law that was passed but was watered down so that districts only have to have “guidelines” in place (but they don’t have to enforce their “guidelines” apparently). We are hoping this amendment will ensure that school districts like ASD will not be able to hide behind the language in a bill and that in passing this law we will see actual results for the kids.  We need your help to show support for increased physical activity. The first opportunity to testify in support of increased physical activity in schools will be on Tuesday, Feb 26th at 9am.  The quick and dirty is send your name to her legislative aide, Chaz (Chaz.Rivas@akleg.gov) then show up at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office ready to testify at 9am on Tuesday, Feb 26 address 1500 W Benson Blvd. You will get 3 minutes. Share your stories please. Passing this law is the easiest way to make more physical activity happen. Or write a letter of support and email that to Chaz (and maybe copy the Anchorage School Board - or just send the one you’ve already sent to the ASD school board to Chaz).  Just a few minutes of your time could make a big difference. Let’s do this!
