We have submitted our petition to the Bass Coast Shire Council - read our report and watch our video

A heartfelt thank you, to each and every one of you, for signing our petition to call for the Bass Coast Shire Council to act to protect San Remo wombats!

Through our hard work treating wombats for mange and advocating for their welfare - bolstered by community support from you - temporary 'Conservation Area' signage was installed on the beach, 2 new rangers have been employed to do patrols, and for the first time the council recognised wombats as important species to consider when designating off-leash beaches as per their Dogs in Public Places Guidelines (2026-2029). 

However, words on signage and on management plan documents, patrols without consequences and community messaging can only go so far. We are STILL seeing similar numbers of dogs visit and enter wombat and joey's burrows on this beach - our count this week (Sept 18, 2026, is 112 dogs at burrows in around 22 months).

Current measures are still failing and we need action.

Friends of San Remo Wombats will officially present our report and petition - with your signature on it - at the next council meeting on October 21st, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Berninneit (Cultural Center) in Cowes, Phillip Island. Please join us if you can. The Bass Coast Shire Council, still hasn't acted to properly address this ongoing wombat welfare issue.
