An Open Letter to the Leadership and Shareholders of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sony Group Corporation

Subject: A Plea for Direction: Restoring Creative Leadership, Player Trust, and the Core Identity of PlayStation

To the Board of Directors, Executive Management, and Shareholders,

As a global community of dedicated, long-standing PlayStation players, creators, and advocates, we address you today not out of negativity, but out of deep concern for the trajectory of the PlayStation brand. The decisions of recent years have eroded the goodwill, loyalty, and confidence built over three decades of industry-defining success.

PlayStation achieved market leadership by being the premier home for creative bravery, groundbreaking single-player narratives, and respect for its audience. Today, that legacy is being dismantled in favor of short-term margin chasing, misallocated capital, and an increasingly anti-consumer ecosystem.

We urge you to consider the following fundamental missteps that are jeopardizing the future of the platform:

1. Creative Mismanagement and the Loss of Studio Identity
The company’s aggressive push into live-service titles has come at an immense human, financial, and reputational cost. Proven, critically acclaimed studios have been forced to pivot toward multiplayer live-service projects completely outside their core competencies—wasting years of development talent and resulting in historic, costly cancellations.

Worse still, the response to these corporate miscalculations has been severe studio closures and mass layoffs. World-class talent is being discarded while management remains unaccountable for the flawed strategic mandates that caused these failures in the first place. Creativity—the very lifeblood of the PlayStation ecosystem—has been relegated to a secondary concern behind speculative monetization models.

2. Erosion of Consumer Choice and Physical Ownership
PlayStation built its reputation on putting players first, yet current hardware and ecosystem strategies actively strip away consumer freedom:

The Phasing Out of Physical Media: By systematically disincentivizing physical disc drives—treating them as costly add-ons rather than platform standards—PlayStation is aggressively pushing players into an all-digital walled garden.

Diminishing Ownership Rights: Digital-only ecosystems revoke true consumer ownership. Players are left with revocable licenses, zero ability to trade, lend, or preserve games, and are exposed to arbitrary price structures and delistings with no recourse.

Aggressive Pricing Without Proportionate Value: Across hardware pricing, premium mid-gen refreshes, and steep subscription hikes for PlayStation Plus, players are asked to pay significantly more while first-party release schedules grow increasingly sparse.

3. A Leadership Disconnect from Gaming Culture
PlayStation has historically triumphed when led by individuals who deeply understood gaming culture, fostered artistic ambition, and valued player sentiment. The current leadership approach feels detached, insular, and driven strictly by spreadsheet metrics at the expense of sustainable brand equity.

Monetizing loyalty to exhaustion is not a viable long-term strategy. When core enthusiasts—the very foundation of PlayStation’s word-of-mouth marketing and ecosystem longevity—feel exploited and disregarded, they will inevitably look elsewhere.

Our Call to Action
We call upon the Board of Directors and Shareholders to initiate meaningful strategic and structural reform:

Restore Leadership with Creative and Industry Vision: Appoint executives who understand game development realities, respect studio identities, and prioritize long-term platform health over quarterly ARPU metrics.

Recommit to Creative Risk and Studio Autonomy: Allow established studios to build the exceptional narrative and single-player experiences they excel at, rather than imposing generic live-service mandates.

Preserve Consumer Choice and Preservation: Protect physical media, respect digital consumer rights, and offer fair, transparent pricing that genuinely reflects added value.

PlayStation became a cultural titan because it dared to believe that great games and respect for players would naturally yield extraordinary commercial success. It is time to abandon the short-sighted strategies of today and return to that founding philosophy.

Bring the focus back to the games. Bring the focus back to the players.

Sincerely,

The PlayStation Community
