Hi Cash Lovers,
RBA governor Michelle Bullocks says it's 'reasonably inevitable' that Australia will be cashless within ten years.
Michelle Bullock says cash is not efficient but 8 out of 10 Australians use cash and 97% support a cash mandate for essential goods and services, according to a big survey by CHOICE.
Michelle Bullock's signature is on all new banknotes printed in Australia because the RBA guarantees that Australian notes are "LEGAL TENDER THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA."
I've written directly to Michelle Bullock at the RBA. I've asked Michelle Bullock to ensure that cash is legal tender throughout Australia forever.
Considering the RBA often makes a big profit for the government from printing notes, I've asked Michelle Bullock to stop talking about the cost of cash (that's the job of the big banks who are private companies) and perhaps mention the positive values of cash like:
Cash is private.
Cash is trusted.
Cash is great for budgeting and surcharge-free.
Cash is instant-settlement - no waiting or worrying about getting paid.
Here is part of my letter to Michelle Bullock:
Under the current financial system in Australia, I only have bank deposits as an alternative to cash. Now, I believe,
the RBA ultimately owns the banknotes I possess, and I trust you to pay the bearer.
My bank has progressively made earning interest on my deposits harder. Much of my money now earns 0.01%. Why
shouldn’t I take my money out and benefit from easy budgeting and no surcharges?
More importantly, I’m confused at why you don’t seem to promote the value to consumers in using cash? Big banks and the ABA consistently talk about the high cost of cash distribution and acceptance. They are private
companies reporting to shareholders. Why are you also appearing to be sympathetic to that argument?
You are the governor currently signing our banknotes while also predicting the complete privatisation of our money and the compulsory conversion of our savings to bank liabilities.
Commonwealth Bank (notably) and other ADIs have benefited greatly in recent decades from cheap access to the
mass savings and deposits of ordinary Australians.
I respectfully ask you to ensure your legal tender is accepted throughout Australia, forever, and declare you are
doing so, loudly.
Yours sincerely,
