Hi Cash Lovers,
Today we learn that Labor is preparing to outlaw debit card surcharges.
Visa, Mastercard and the big banks are celebrating a great victory right now because (of course) it's not REALLY a 'ban.'
Hahaha, of course Visa, Mastercard and the banks are not going to be giving up any fees or revenue, hahaha, they are just hiding their fees away so they can JACK UP PRICES whenever they like.
Visa, Mastercard and the banks WANT this fake 'ban' on surcharging because it's just hiding their fees away from us.
ALL PRICES WILL RISE ON DAY ONE if card surcharging is banned and small businesses will be squeezed by higher bank charges.
Card surcharging at the retail point of sale is an Australian regulatory innovation that has always been stridently opposed by big banks, Visa and Mastercard.
Card surcharging at the retail point of sale provides consumers with clear, up-front information about the cost of their payment. They can choose which payment method to use - credit, debit, eftpos, cash, BNPL or other method, based on the disclosed information.
Already EFTPOS companies are jacking up their fees to consumers and rewarding merchants with Qantas Frequent Flyer points, often paid for by inflated card surcharges.
People who use cash should NOT have to pay for the frequent flyer points of others via hidden fees.
All retail payments in Australia must be surcharge-free for cash and surcharged at a cost-recovery rate for all cashless payment methods.
The cost of Apple Pay is already hidden away, now they want to hide card costs away from us as well.
