Major Electronics companies source their lithium-ion batteries through LG Chem. Companies such as Apple, Samsung, and even Volkswagen use these batteries in their products. These batteries are used in almost all smart phones and laptops. In order to manufacture the lithium ion batteries they need to obtain the rare earth mineral: cobalt. Cobalt is most abundant in Northern DRC where men and children go up to depths of 200 meters to mine. All the cobalt mined usually ends up in the hands of Congo Dong Fang mining company, or CDM. CDM has a smelting operation in the DRC which after processing gets sold to their parent company Huayo Cobalt in China. Huayo Cobalt then supplies LG Chem with the cobalt in order to produce their lithium-ion batteries. With LG Chem supplying a large majority of this worlds major electronics companies than that means they are all profiting from child labour and human rights abuses. This can easily be stopped by going to the root of the issue with either CDM or Huayo Cobalt. This campaign is focused to make Huayo Cobalt to more intensive research into the mining operations. Then eliminate the child labour and human rights abuses!
