My name is Christopher Hall and I am in need of your help. Let's be honest... our children are in need of your help more than I.

On July 22nd, I read to a group of kids at the Southeast Regional Library in Gilbert, AZ. I read to the children in drag. The purpose of the event was to help children realize it is okay to be different. All individuals are different in their own way and  making fun of a person because of these differences is something we should avoid. Instead, we should embrace these differences.

The event was such a success so we decided to try and do it again. The green light was given and we were scheduled to do another storytime on November 18th. Unfortunately, upper management at the library put a stop to the event. When asked why, the answer provided was, "we were not qualified to do a storytime". What exactly would one need to be qualified was my next question.

Personally, I have my level one fingerprint clearance card and work with some of our most vulnerable (those with developmental disabilities). I also train individuals and conduct trainings to over 200 individuals a month. I am very involved in education and have my degree in Public Administration from Northern Arizona University. I also have been involved in several educational forums at local universities and community colleges across Central Arizona.

The issue is not an issue of qualification but instead an issue of fear had by individuals in high positions. In positions in which they are elected to serve a community. They should not pick and choose what part of the community they serve. They serve us all, including individuals from within the LGBTQ community and our allies.

Truth is, too many LGBTQ youth kill themselves due to a lack of support and constant ridicule. What type of message do you think we send when a library decides to banish an event that is geared to promote acceptance?

Please sign this petition asking that the Southeast Regional Library please reconsider their stance of the issue and bring back Reading with the Queens.

I ask that you please sign and have your voices heard by calling (602) 652-3000.

No child should feel left alone and question their worth. We must stand up for those who depend on us most!
