Boris Kodjoe insulted on American Airlines

Did you see the latest American Airlines fiasco? Well known actor Boris Kodjoe states "I was last to board my @AmericanAir flight to LA and asked the flight attendant if I could hang up my jacket in the visibly half empty closet. She told me no and to put it into the overhead in economy" Why did she assume he was economy with open seats in 1st class? Even if he was economy with the flight fully boarded what was the issue?
