Stop Police Abuse of BSL

Stop Police Abuse of BSL

The Issue

It is now 25 years, since the Dangerous Dogs Act was introduced, yet the legislation has not been successful in protecting the public from dangerous dogs. This situation has come about because of the way this legislation has been abused; we have seen an epidemic of dogs being seized by Police forces nation wide, who have no history of aggression whatsoever. These are mostly totally docile Staffordshire Bull Terrier's; and are quite deliberately being classed as 'Pit Bull types'. When it comes to seizing harmless and docile dogs under BSL the resources the police have at their disposal seem to be a bottomless pit; but when quizzed on the apparent do nothing policy towards the epidemic of dog theft in Britain, the police tell us they haven't got the resources. But then since the owners of dogs seized then have to pay what amounts to a ransom payment to both the police, and the courts, before their dog is returned, the current abuse of this legislation has become a profitable cash cow for the authorities. Home Secretary we the under signed, want to see BSL only used when a dog has been proven to have shown signs of aggression, with evidence of the same. If a dog has been seized under BSL under false pretenses; then the dog should be returned to it's rightful owner, at no financial cost to it's rightful owner, and the police officer responsible should then face a disciplinary hearing. If this were to be put in place, then the authorities would, have no financial incentive to abuse the legislation, and the legislation would be enforced for it's intended purpose.
