25 years ago, on 22 April 1993, Stephen Lawrence was brutally murdered by a gang of racists. In the same borough Rolan Adams in 1991 and Rohit Duggal in 1992 were also murdered.
Since Stephen Lawrence’s murder there have been around 90 racist murders, including Ricky Reel, Anthony Walker, Surjit Singh Chokkar, Mohammed Saleem and Mushin Ahmed. For some justice has been done, but many of these families have received partial or no justice.
Only two men were convicted for Stephen Lawrence’s murder and one for Rolan Adams and Rohit Duggal, when many more were involved in the attacks. No one has been brought to justice for Ricky Reel, Surjit Singh Chokkar and many other families.
A heroic campaign for justice by Stephen Lawrence’s family led to the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry by Sir William Macpherson - a landmark in the campaign against racism. However the majority of the 70 recommendations in this report are yet to be implemented.
In light of growing concern about the number of deaths of black men in police custody, stop and search and the horrific treatment of Windrush families, its time to put institutional racism and the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry back on the political agenda. We call on the government and police to implement the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry recommendations.
